About Coron Island Protected Landscape and Seascape

Located in the northern part of Palawan in the Philippines, Coron Island Protected Landscape and Seascape encompasses approximately 20,000 hectares of both land and surrounding marine areas. The island features iconic limestone cliffs and karst formations, turquoise lagoons, and white sand beaches that create one of the most visually breathtaking landscapes in Southeast Asia. Ecologically, the area is a critical habitat for a wide array of marine life, including vibrant coral reef ecosystems, diverse fish species, sea turtles, and endemic birds. The island's terrestrial section is covered with dense tropical forests that support rare flora and fauna. Historically, the region is known for its World War II sunken Japanese warships, making it a globally recognized dive destination. Recreational activities range from snorkeling and scuba diving in spectacular underwater caves and wreck sites to hiking and kayaking through unspoiled coastal mangroves and lagoons. Visitors are attracted by the pristine natural beauty, cultural heritage of local indigenous communities, and abundant opportunities for eco-tourism. The protected status ensures sustainable management aimed at conserving the area's rich biodiversity while supporting local livelihoods dependent on tourism and fishing. Coron Island is accessible by boat from the town of Coron on Busuanga Island, acting as the gateway to the protected landscape and seascape. The blend of dramatic seascapes, remarkable biodiversity, and cultural significance makes this protected area a multi-faceted outdoor destination.
